Rip the Tape Off Your Box

‘Get out of the box ‘mentality. I always like to use this analogy as a way of describing how we might think of our future. Many times in life, we stay in a ‘box’ mentality where we see four walls around us, and we do all of our thinking within this cube. We don’t seem to see ourselves being successful or moving up in life beyond a certain point. But God has no limits, and He has called us to a life of freedom, excellence and expansion in Christ Jesus.

The devil can really trick us into believing that we have achieved all there is to accomplish and that there is nothing more we can do in life or in God. Sometimes people and circumstances place those limitations on us and cause us to doubt ourselves and our ability to advance in our careers, families or other areas of our lives. Unfortunately, sometimes we are our own worst enemy; we place limitations on our talents, abilities and potentials, and we undermine our ability to rise to the heights God expects of us.

The believer is not meant to live life out of fear. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NJV)

Can you imagine if you decided to unlock your dreams and visons for your life, escaped from this boxed-up mentality and believed in all the possibilities that God has for you? You would truly be a world changer! “With God, nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37 NKJV). “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10 NIV). “If you have faith…you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.” (Matthew 21:21 NIV) “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2 NIV). Scripture after scripture admonishes us to believe, to think and to perform at a higher level.

Most of us forget to dream, and others do not afford themselves the luxury of dreaming. We shut things down before they ever get off the ground, especially if we have dreamed before and it failed. Some people are afraid to love again because their relationships failed or they were rejected. Everything we see—relationships, career, and business opportunities—are all processed through a box of failure. Risk is completely factored out of our frame of reference, and we allow fear to cripple us.

I always talk about how my family was so low and in such a deep dark hole that as we looked up, we could only see the bottom of the earth. But, we dared to dream big. We could not do it any other way. We chose to believe what the Word of God said about us. We always saw ourselves bigger than our circumstances. Nothing in our thoughts was based on where we were in life at that time.  We were in the worst rental home imaginable, where no appliance worked, and getting groceries from the church to live on, but we made a choice to pray and to believe for bigger and better things. We believed in a better future, that our bank accounts could be overflowing and that our dreams would become a reality. Faith believes the impossible can happen…and here we are today, owning two universities with one having over 29,000 students worldwide. Wow! Can God do that for you? Yes! He can!

The believer is not meant to live life out of fear. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NJV) We must reject a fear-based approach to processing life, and always have hope in spite of our circumstances. Mistakes do happen and not every outcome will meet our expectations. However, we must be confident in a good God, believing that all things will work together for our good (Romans 8:28 NKJV), and that even some of the most hurtful things that have happened to us can be redeemed (Genesis 38-48 – story of Joseph).

The Bible says that you have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16 NIV), and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13 NKJV). The book of Proverbs teaches wisdom, give us tools to deal with life’s problems and instructions as to how to create success in your life. God has made all the tools available to us, and we can go has high as we dare to imagine (Ephesians 3:20 NIV). The question is, how high do you want to go? We have to push down those walls of fear, worry, failure etc. and take hold of what God says about us. The Word of God inspires faith (Romans 10:17 NIV). Rip the tape off your box and start believing what God is putting in your heart today!

If you would like more encouragement on scriptures to speak over your situation, you can find much more in my book called, “Stand on the Word”. For the story of how my family came from nothing to where we are today, you can read “Winning the Game of Life”.

How to Keep Going

We are faced often with situations that bring us down. I can remember when we were trying to build our company, each day there were so many things that came against us to try to completely stop us from going forward. Most of the time, they were make or break situations. We had to take risks by faith and stand firm in our decisions, even when we felt as though we jumped off the side of a mountain hoping that there would be that lonely limb jutting out from the mountain a mile or so down that we could grab. Bringing God into our work life was the only way we made it through those trying situations. Columbia Southern University now has up to 30,000 online students worldwide, and it is changing lives daily with education. If my dad had turned back, which many people told us to do, we would not now be an example of what God could do in the midst of crisis and even when there was no hope.

I look back, and I am amazed at the progress we made. It is all God’s doing, because we are a miracle family. When my dad told people that we were starting a university, some laughed and others said, “There is no way! It is too hard; you can’t do anything big like this.”

"We stood our ground, because we knew what was inside of us. We were great because of Christ."

We stood our ground, because we knew what was inside of us. We were great because of Christ. We knew we had the mind of Christ because the Scriptures say it. It also says in the Bible that by faith all things are possible. We overcame so much and beat most odds by just being relentlessly determined that we would go against what others said. If they said we could not make it, that just made our faith go higher!

I am sure many of you can relate. Maybe you are going through some hard times and you aren’t even sure you want to push any more. The devil does not want success for you. He hopes you will just shut it all down and give up, so he always tries to remind us of our failures. But our hope is in God! He said that we are always the head and never the tail. We can rise up from whatever situation we are facing, in His strength, and we can overcome the negative thoughts that take our confidence away. In James 4:7, it says to resist the devil, and he will flee. I say this a lot when I feel defeated and just plain tired. Even in those times, I know that I have to rise up and speak the Word of God in place of negative thoughts.

Worldwide evangelist and speaker Marilyn Hickey gave me some powerful advice when I was struggling physically. She said that the answer was speaking the Word of God over my situation. She told me that the Bible says you will be healed. It is just a matter of time, and it will happen. She told me the Word is always my answer. So, I decided that I would have a scripture ready to speak out loud whenever something started to discourage me.

I want to encourage you today that you can defeat the devil; you can overcome no matter your situation, because the Word of God says that you can. We are more the overcomers through God! So, we should rise up and take our place. Many ask how I became successful, and I say it is because I spoke the Word and prayed diligently. I would not stop believing that I could win. I would not stop simply because I knew that God said I could win. I wrote my book Stand on the Word to give people a resource with practical steps for how to stand on the Word of God. This book is my success recipe. It will give you hope, because I teach you how my family and I stood on the Word when we were at our lowest. In dire poverty, facing multiple bankruptcies and even sometimes without food, we had to stand on something, and all we had was God and His Word. There are powerful scriptures packed in this pocket-size book that will train you up fast. I teach you how and why to confess the Word and how to stand on it, believing for your victory.

In Joshua 1:8 (NIV), it says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Standing on the Word and meditating on it causes great success!

To get your copy of this powerful resource, Stand on the Word, go to http://chantellcooleyministries.com/media/books/stand-on-the-word. And make sure not to leave this book on your bookshelf; it is a resource that should be used daily, in your purse, briefcase, on your nightstand or your desk. If you use it, you will see change in your life.

Remember, Keep Moving Forward!
